Take a golf cart, add two doors to it with four bigger wheels, throw in an electric motor and you get a Renault Twizy. Renault is known for coming up with radical looking (or odd looking) cars and this new car is just one one of them – and it really just looks like a cross between a motorcycle and your uncle’s golf cart.
Although it was just a concept revealed for the very first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009, Renault unveiled the production model in Paris in 2010 telling us the Renault Twizy has really been in the works for a long time and Renault is serious about it. Today, the Twizy is available in European showrooms, including UK.
Not a big car by any stretch but not tiny either, the 2-seater Twizy, measuring 2.34 meters in length and 1.24 meters in width, is available in three trim levels – the Urban, Colour and Technic – and also two engine choices.
The dull and uninspiring low power Twizy is motivated by a 5hp motor all the way up to a top speed of 45km/h. Although it was not intended initially for the UK market, Renault said they would study the market potential in conjunction with a new category of European license for 16 year olds that take effect in Britain come January 2013.
The regular Twizy is powered by a 17hp electric motor with a top speed limited to about 80km/h. Its battery can be recharged in three and a half hours using a standard three-pin plug to offer a driving range of 60 miles, which is just a little shy of 100 kilometers. In house wife talk, that is a lot of supermarket trips.
The price for a 17hp Renault Twizy Urban starts at £6,690. Cheap but do remember that this price does not include the battery which Renault is leasing out for a monthly fee of £45 but then why not spread the cost of your vehicle with a car loans for bad credit product from MSG Cars.
